Vedam Design Leads India’s First Indigenous Ocean Research Vessel Project

Vedam Design has played a pivotal role in the development of India’s first indigenous Oceanographic Research Vessel (ORV), now under construction at Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE).

Vedam provided comprehensive design solutions, including basic design, 3D modelling, dynamic positioning (DP) capability, advanced structural design, and production drawings.

The 6000-ton ORV features cutting-edge technologies such as unmanned machinery space (UMS), DP2 capabilities, all-electric propulsion for sustainability, and ABS classification with UWN (AL) and UWN (AT) notations.

Key equipment includes gondola-mounted multi-beam echo sounders, retractable drop keels, towing winches, and a deep-sea corer system, enabling advanced research in shallow and deep waters.

Key specifications:

  • Length Overall (LOA): 89.4 meters
  • Speed: 14 knots
  • Power Source: 4x1600kW engines
  • Propulsion: 2x2000kW motors with bow, stern, and retractable thrusters

This collaboration between Vedam Design and GRSE marks a transformative step for India’s maritime science and technology, paving the way for cutting-edge oceanographic research.
