Carbon capture & storage systems (CCS) on ships is an emerging technology with the potential to significantly reduce the maritime industry's greenhouse gas emissions. It involves capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) from ship exhaust gases and storing it onboard for disposal. This is already a proven solution in onshore industries.
With ships already fitted with EGCS/Scrubber system, it can be quickly adapted to capture CO2 alongside SOx emissions. This will involve modifications to the scrubber's internals and piping, along with installation of additional absorber and storage units. It offers the flexibility to scale up as per requirement.
The technology providers at present consider using organic amine compound solution to absorb/desorb the CO2 in the emissions. However, CCS technology for ships is still in its early stages and requires further development and cost reduction for widespread adoption. Further disruptive technologies are already paving the way for CCS evolution.
At present, it is primarily challenged by logistics to dispose the captured carbon. Offloading captured carbon at ports requires specialized infrastructure and handling procedures. This includes compatible storage facilities, transfer equipment, and safety protocols to prevent leaks or environmental damage. The development of such infrastructure is at an early stage at very few regions.
Also, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has not yet adopted carbon capture as an acceptable solution for improving a ship's Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) rating.
Despite the challenges, carbon capture on ships holds significant promise for decarbonizing the maritime industry. The IMO is exploring the potential of carbon capture technologies as a means to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping.
